Demographic history of wood stork (Mycteria americana) Brazilian Pantanal colonies revealed by mitochondrial DNA analysis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Lopes,Iara Freitas; Brito,Reinaldo Alves de; Henrique-Silva,Flávio; Del Lama,Silvia Nassif.
We used mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences to investigate the demographic history of the wood stork (Mycteria americana) populations in the Brazilian Pantanal. Sequences of 390/460 bp fragment of the mtDNA control region were analyzed in 62 wood stork specimens from 8 colonies using neutrality tests, phylogeographic, and coalescent analyses. Population expansion was supported by the significantly negative values of Tajima’s (D = -2.071) and Fu’s (Fs = -14.544) statistics and the unimodal pattern of mismatch distribution. Nested clade analyses indicated a historic range expansion event and recurrent gene flow that was restricted by isolation by distance as explanations for the haplotype distribution among the sampled colonies. High genetic diversity and...

Genetic variability of 10 microsatellite markers in the characterization of Brazilian Nellore cattle (Bos indicus) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Cervini,Marcelo; Henrique-Silva,Flávio; Mortari,Norma; Matheucci Jr,Euclides.
We assessed the polymorphism of 10 microsatellites in Brazilian Nellore cattle (Bos indicus) using a commercial multiplex system. Allele frequencies, polymorphism information content, heterozygosity and exclusion probability were calculated. Allele frequencies revealed that in the sample analyzed the markers were not equally polymorphic. The exclusion probabilities and the polymorphism information content of some loci in Nellore cattle were lower than in Bos taurus breeds. When all the microsatellites were considered the combined exclusion probability was 0.9989. This multiplex analysis can contribute toward pedigree information, adequate genetic improvements and breeding programs.

Molecular cloning of a hyaluronidase fromBothrops pauloensisvenom gland J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Castanheira,Letícia Eulalio; Rodrigues,Renata Santos; Boldrini-França,Johara; Fonseca,Fernando PP; Henrique-Silva,Flávio; Homsi-Brandeburgo,Maria I; Rodrigues,Veridiana M.
Background Hyaluronate is one of the major components of extracellular matrix from vertebrates whose breakdown is catalyzed by the enzyme hyaluronidase. These enzymes are widely described in snake venoms, in which they facilitate the spreading of the main toxins in the victim’s body during the envenoming. Snake venoms also present some variants (hyaluronidases-like substances) that are probably originated by alternative splicing, even though their relevance in envenomation is still under investigation. Hyaluronidases-like proteins have not yet been purified from any snake venom, but the cDNA that encodes these toxins was already identified in snake venom glands by transcriptomic analysis. Herein, we report the cloning and in silicoanalysis of the first...
